Building Wealth with Intention

Hi—I’m Charlene, and I help people build wealth intentionally, so it supports the life they actually want.
I’m a wife, a mom of two, and the first in my family to achieve work optional status after a 21-year career. This blog—First Gen FI—is my way of giving back by sharing the practical lessons I’ve learned about money, career, and intentional living.
What First Gen FI Is About
First Gen FI is a personal finance and financial independence blog for people who want more from life than just a higher paycheck.
If you:
- Didn’t grow up with strong money role models
- Are building wealth for the first time
- Feel burned out chasing “success” that doesn’t quite fit
…you’re in the right place.
Here, we focus on using money as a tool—to create freedom, alignment, and a life that feels good day to day, not just someday.
At First Gen FI, we work on two core priorities:
- Getting clear on what a good life actually means to you
- Aligning your financial decisions to support that life
Along the way, we focus on four pillars of financial independence: saving money, increasing income, building wealth, and living well.
My Journey to Financial Independence
My path to financial independence wasn’t linear.
I started my career in the nonprofit world and loved the mission—but quickly realized it wouldn’t support the life I wanted for my future family. I earned an MBA and moved into the for‑profit world, carrying a lot of guilt about leaving work that felt more values‑driven.
The paychecks were better, and my career took off. I balanced full‑time work with school, became a mom, and leaned hard into my type‑A achiever tendencies—working long days, caring for my family, then logging back in late at night.
Several promotions later, I was burned out.
When people asked where I saw myself in five years, I gave the “right” ambitious answers—but they weren’t honest. It took a corporate restructuring to finally slow me down and force real reflection.
What I wanted wasn’t more status or more money. I wanted to be present—mentally and emotionally—with my family.
Why Money and Lifestyle Are Inseparable
To live more intentionally, we had to make intentional financial choices.
We sold our dream home, moved cross‑country to Charlotte, NC, and redesigned our lifestyle around what mattered most. It wasn’t easy—but it was one of the best decisions we’ve ever made.
We focused on four key areas:
- Living well by prioritizing experiences over things
- Saving money by getting the big decisions right
- Increasing income by rebuilding intentionally after stepping back
- Building wealth through thoughtful investing and planning
Eight years later, I’m fully work optional—and deeply grateful.
Why I Write This Blog
I created First Gen FI to show that financial independence isn’t just about retiring early. It’s about creating choices, flexibility, and peace—especially if you’re the first in your family to do so.
You don’t need a perfect background, extreme frugality, or a six‑figure starting salary. You need clarity, intention, and consistent action.
If that resonates, I’m so glad you’re here.
